Director Luca Guadagnino, known for Call Me By Your Name and Challengers, has revealed that his new film Queer, starring Daniel Craig, will feature numerous explicit gay sex scenes. This adaptation of William S Burroughs’ 1985 novel was announced last year.
A Story of Obsession and Addiction
Daniel Craig plays Lee, a character struggling with drug addiction in Mexico City. Lee becomes infatuated with Allerton, a discharged American navy serviceman, played by Drew Starkey of Netflix’s Outer Banks. Their relationship is complex, with Allerton toying with Lee’s emotions, leading to an intense and obsessive dynamic. The two men eventually travel together, deepening their connection.
“My Most Personal Film”
In an interview with Cinecittà, Luca Guadagnino described Queer as his most personal film. He mentioned that the movie is a tribute to directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, known for their 1948 musical The Red Shoes. Guadagnino expressed his admiration for their work, stating, “I’ve seen The Red Shoes at least 50 times. I think they would appreciate the sex scenes in Queer, which are numerous and quite scandalous.”
Behind the Scenes
The screenplay for Queer was written by Justin Kuritzkes, who also collaborated with Guadagnino on Challengers. Kuritzkes shared his experience of adapting Burroughs’ novel, which was written in the 1950s but remained unpublished until the 1980s.
He admitted that the book was not initially suited for a film adaptation, making the task more challenging. “Luca gave me the book for Queer while we were on set for Challengers. He said, ‘Read this tonight and tell me if you want to write it,’” Kuritzkes told Radio Times. “I read it that night and told him I wanna write it, and I was really honoured that he asked me.”
Queer is expected to premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this year, with a wider release date to follow. The film’s bold content and the involvement of high-profile actors like Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey have already generated significant buzz.
“A Masterclass in Sexual Tension”
Guadagnino’s previous film, Challengers, was noted for its intense bi-love triangle. The director’s focus on the physicality and presence of his actors is evident in his work. “I’m passionate about observing the bodies in space, the details of a nape of a neck. When I choose my actors, I don’t care that they are good at acting. I look for a three-dimensionality that can be captured with the camera,” he explained.
Daniel Craig’s Second Gay Role
It’s worth noting that this is not Daniel Craig’s first time playing a gay character. His role in the Knives Out series also portrays a gay character, adding another layer of interest for fans of his work.
